What are the main differences between value engineering in the German manufacturing industry and the mostly Dutch civil oriented studies? For what reason? Do German practices give us food for thought? Hein de Jong was curious and attended the “Praxis Wertanalyse 2014” conference in Stuttgart, where 17 companies from the manufacturing industry shared their experiences. Bottom line: the nature of profits, customers and products shape the application of VE. All organizations must innovate but are hampered by complexity of organizations
and systems. VE studies can be very “gründlich” prepared and seek for optimization of critical parameters such as production cost, profit, weight, ‘waste’ (lean) and value as perceived by the customer. The continous effort for improvement in short and long term fits well in the Rhineland culture and may serve as admired source of inspiration for our manufacturing and civil industry.
