Sustainable CO2 Capturing and Utilization in practice and other innovative solutions to support the energy transition.
Dear member,
NAP has invited two very interesting guest speakers from Twence and TNO at our contact-meeting in September.
One of the aspects that has been researched a lot in the recent years is the capturing and utilization of CO2. At Twence theory has been transformed into practice. And of course, this has not been an easy trajectory. Abdullah Cakir, project manager for the Twence project, was there from the start and will share the challenges that needed to be overcome to realize the Carbon Capture and Use plant.
TNO has been developing innovative solutions to support a sustainable industry for many years. Jurriaan Boon will go through the topics of electrification, integration of energy carriers, and circularity. He will in particular highlight possibilities TNO researches for capturing and utilizing CO2.
NAP and our guest speakers are looking forward to discuss these interesting developments with you on September 21st at Hotel Oud London in Zeist!
First presentation: The challenges on the road to CCU at Twence, a Waste to Energy Power Plant
Twence started the realization of a Carbon Capture and Use plant in 2022 and the CCU Plant is scheduled to be commissioned for the production of first CO2 by the end of Q4 2023.
The main focus of this project for Twence is to capture CO2 for the use in Dutch Horticulture. Until now predominantly gas-fired CHP’s are used in horticulture to produce the required CO2. By switching to the use of CO2 from Twence an >80% CO2 reduction per kg captured CO2 can be achieved, which is substantiated with an LCA study performed by CE Delft.
The process of developing a viable business case for CCU was a long and complex process. It involved technical challenges, managing many stakeholders, policy & regulations which were (and still are) under development and a world that went into a big STOP due to COVID-19 measures. Right in these turbulent times the Twence CCU project was conceived. We look back to this process and to the decisions that needed to be made to make this a viable project.
Abdullah Cakir is the project manager for the Twence CCU Project. Abdullah was hired as an external project manager in 2018 to perform the FEED-study and the contracting for Twence CCU project. After the restart of the project due to COVID-19 delay, Abdullah was asked to also take on the role of project manager for the realization phase, which is scheduled to be finalized end of 2023.
Second presentation: Innovative solutions for a sustainable industry, including synthesis of DME from CO2
Independent research organization TNO generates innovative solutions for a sustainable industry. This includes understanding systemic change and how it can be accelerated. Jurriaan Boon (TNO Energy & Materials Transition) will discuss the topics of electrification, integration of energy carriers, and circularity. Recent piloting activities will be highlighted including a containerized pilot reactor for the synthesis of DME from CO2 as well as the STEPWISE demonstration plant capturing 14 tons of CO2 per day from steel gases.
As scientist Dr Jurriaan Boon has spent over twenty years in R&D at TNO on intensified processes that enable a sustainable chemical industry. His current research focuses on carbon circularity and CCUS, as well as electrified and intensified reaction processes for the energy transition. He has a visiting researcher position at Eindhoven University of Technology in the field of chemical process intensification and is a member of Processes4Planet (A.SPIRE) Research Association’s Permanent Working Group 2 on process optimization & carbon capture and utilization.
